Dreamtime

The southern ocean is a theater of extremes — home to gigantic swells and formidable wildlife,The reefs are as sharp as they are stunning sculptures in their own right, crafted by the relentless storms that slam into the coastline.

In the stillness that precedes the contact of the lip to the face of the wave, there’s a whisper of the Dreamtime — that sacred time in Indigenous Australian lore when ancestral spirits shaped the land, the sea, and the sky.

This photograph, taken off the southern coast of Australia, was an encounter with the formidable beauty of nature but a homage to the deep, spiritual narrative that has pulsed through my feet as I walk the land. Alone out on the ocean I feel a profound connection to teachings of the traditional custodians of the land, an understanding that the ocean’s rhythms are as much a part of their rich heritage as the land itself.

This is my own artistic tribute to the Dreamtime — a moment of huge challenge outside ones comfort zone. attempting to harness the spirit of the ocean through the lens of my camera, witnessing one of the craziest moments I have ever seen.
